Stages of our Business Transformation Programme

We're improving our tax system over three years. 2018 will introduce changes to the way you manage your business income tax.

The first stage of changes

The first stage of changes was released in February 2017 and included:

  • Moving GST into myIR Secure Online Services so you could file returns and make payments at the same time.
  • Introducing an online registration process for new migrants and businesses applying for an IRD number.
  • Recognising New Zealand Business Numbers when you contact us.

These new services were the first step to make it simple for you to manage your tax and work with us.

The second stage of changes

The second stage of changes focuses on streamlining business income taxes. These changes were released in April 2018 and include:

  • Accounting income method (AIM) for paying provisional tax
    If you're a business you can choose to manage your provisional tax using AIM-capable software. You'll pay your provisional tax as you go, matching how your business receives its income.

  • Making it easier to file your PAYE online
    If you're a business you'll be able to file your employment schedules and deductions in myIR. This will save you time and streamline your payroll processes.

  • Moving returns and calculators in to myIR
    We're moving some of our fringe benefit tax (FBT), gaming machine duty (GMD) and portfolio investment entity (PIE) services and products into myIR.

Future stages of changes

  • The third stage of changes will focus on social policy.
  • The fourth stage of changes will focus on the remaining changes required to complete the new tax administration system.
