Instructions for using online forms, returns and calculators

Supported browsers

We have tried to make our forms, returns and calculators as accessible as possible, so they can be used by a wide cross section of the community. They have been designed to support a wide range of browsers.

If you are unable to access our services, your browser, system and/or firewall settings may need updating.

When information is sent over the internet it goes from one computer to another until it reaches its destination. This means that information could be intercepted at one of the intermediate computers.

Inland Revenue removes this risk because any information sent through interactive pages in our website is encrypted. That's why the addresses of our interactive pages start with "https" instead of the usual "http". The "s" indicates a secure page.

Also, a wide range of other security precautions have been used to protect your information.

Navigating through the forms, returns and calculators

We have redeveloped our online forms, returns and calculators to make them as easy to use as possible. One of the key improvements is the flow of the forms. We have endeavoured to make these products smarter, so only questions you are required to answer are visible. The answers you give earlier in the form affect the questions you are asked later on. That way only information which is relevant to you is presented. This feature helps to eliminate confusion by not cluttering the screen with unnecessary questions, or forcing people to scroll unnecessarily to find the questions they need to answer.

If you think you may have entered the wrong information in the previous part of the form, return or calculator, just click the 'go back' button to enter the correct information. Whilst you can use your browser's back button to go back to previous pages, you cannot use the browser's forward button once you have made changes to those pages. Instead, when you move forward through the form, return or calculator, be sure to use the 'continue' button (otherwise your changes will be lost).
