We’re making changes to help make tax more straightforward for people in New Zealand.

As a next step, we’ll upgrade our systems from 3pm on Thursday, 18 April to 8am on Friday, 26 April.

During this time, myIR secure online services will be unavailable and our phone lines and offices will be closed.

This is a significant upgrade that will make tax simpler and more automated for millions of New Zealanders.

myIR online accounts

myIR online services will be unavailable between 3pm, Thursday 18 April and 8am, Friday 26 April, while we upgrade our systems.

Returns saved as drafts in myIR will be deleted on 12 April when we begin essential work that needs to be completed before this upgrade. So, please submit any draft returns to us before 5pm Friday 12 April.

Secure mails and any further returns saved as drafts in myIR will be deleted on 18 April when we begin our upgrade. Please submit these to us before 3pm Thursday 18 April.

When myIR becomes available at 8am on 26 April, all secure mail messages that arrived in your inbox before 18 April will be available in the archive section of your inbox. This includes any previously unread messages.

Working for Families Tax Credit payment dates

Easter payment date changes

One Working for Families Tax Credits payment date will shift in April 2019 due to the Easter holiday. Payments for the week that begins on Monday, 22 April will be made early and will be available in your bank account on Friday 19 April.

Payment date is changing from 29 April

From Monday, 29 April 2019 the day of the week that customers receive payments will change:

  • if you previously received your payments on a Monday, you will now receive them on a Tuesday. This applies to most people.
  • if you previously received your payments on a Tuesday, you will now receive them on a Wednesday. This applies to some credit union customers.

Please adjust any automatic payments you’ve set up in your bank account to take this change into account.

Employer obligations

Your March employer monthly schedule

Employer monthly schedules (IR348) for March 2019 are due by 20 April 2019. Please plan ahead and file before myIR becomes unavailable at 3pm on 18 April.

Since some of our key systems will be unavailable from 3pm on Thursday, 18 April to 8am on Friday, 26 April, any returns due during this period can be filed on 26 April 2019 without incurring penalties.

Remember, all employers will transition to payday filing from 1 April 2019, so this is the final employer monthly schedule you’ll send to us.

Your employer deductions

You can still make payments during our short close down period. Employer deductions (IR345) for March are due 20 April 2019. But because 20 April falls on Easter weekend this year, you'll have until Tuesday, 23 April to pay without incurring penalties.

Payday filing responsibilities

Since key Inland Revenue systems will be unavailable from 3pm, 18 April to 8am, 26 April, any returns due during this period can be filed on Friday, 26 April 2019 without incurring penalties.

Personal tax summaries (PTSs)

We’re making tax more straightforward. The tax assessment process is now automatic. That means you won’t need to request or confirm a personal tax summary in 2019. We’ll let you know if you have a refund due or a payment to make.

Some customers are required to file an income tax return

You only need to file an income tax return if you earned income other than salary, wages, interest, dividends or taxable Maori authority distributions.

Income tax returns for the 2018/19 tax year are due by 7 July 2019, unless you have an extension of time.

From 8am, 26 April 2019:

  • IR3 income tax returns for the 2018/19 tax year will be available in myIR online services
  • all income tax returns for the 2018/19 tax year will be available on our website.

GST and provisional tax

GST returns and payments for March 2019 are due by 7 May 2019.

The third instalment of your provisional tax is due on 7 May if you:

  • have a March balance date, and
  • use the standard or estimation option to calculate your provisional tax payments.

If you use the ratio option to calculate your provisional tax payments and you have a March balance date, your sixth provisional instalment is due on 7 May.

Withholding tax

Your withholding tax returns

Resident withholding tax and non-resident withholding tax returns for March 2019 are due by 20 April.

Since some of our key systems will be unavailable from 3pm on Thursday, 18 April to 8am on Friday, 26 April, these returns can be filed on 26 April without incurring penalties.

Paying your withholding tax

You can still make payments during this period. Withholding tax payments for March are due by 20 April 2019, but because 20 April falls on Easter weekend this year, you’ll have until Tuesday, 23 April to pay without incurring penalties.
